ON OUR COVER
On Sunday, July
31st, the first scheduled Excalibur Association Members meet was held at
Jim Kersting's home in North Judson. I had invited 22 members from the
state of Indiana and Illinois. From the first mailing of 22 invitations,
10 response cards were returned with 5 members stating they would
definitely attend the function, which was to be a simple gathering with
a parade around Bass Lake. The parade was the grand finale of a summer
festival, held each year, in honor of crowning the chosen Queen of Bass
Lake.
The day turned out to be simply beautiful; one of those few
chosen days of the year when the temperature is just right. However,
during the previous night and early morning it rained and stormed and at
9 A.M. Sunday it certainly looked like rain clouds would hamper the
first Excalbur Association members meet. The hour was nearing noon, my
wife had returned home from teaching her Sunday school class and set a
coffee table with juice, warm sweet rolls, and lots of hot coffee. The
Welcome Excaliburs sign had been appropriately set along side the state
highway entering the sleepy little town of North Judson. My t
houghts were, "what |
are all my
friends and neighbors going to think when they see all these beautiful
Excaliburs rolling into town?"
I look at my watch, it was nearing noon when a
beautiful Series I roadster, white with black fenders, pulled in the
driveway. We backed it in next to my Series II Phaeton and introduced
ourselves to Mr. & Mrs. Martin Shane from Waukegan, Illinois.
A few moments later a flawless 1974 Series II
Phaeton pulled in and backed into position leaving room for the others.
Mr. and Mrs. George Dietrich and son George of Hinsdale, Illinois
introduced themselves. Conversation came very easily as we all had
something in common - we consider these Excaliburs to be the ultimate in
beauty and driving pleasure.
Everything went as planned - except we certainly
missed
the other expected members that apparently got scared out by the threat
of rain.
The parade was like any other parade, except the
cool breeze blowing off the lake was welcomed, and the usual "aw's",
"wow's" and "holy mackerals, look at that car" were heard. I led the
Excaliburs with my Series II playing Dr. Zhivago's 'Somewhere My Love'
on the air horns, while behind me was George Dietrich giving that low
air horn blast and a special set of fitted horns on Martin's Series I
brought up the rear.
After the parade and lunch, we met back at my
home for more conversation, soft drinks and exchanges of ideas
concerning the Association, care and maintenance of the Excalibur, the
up and coming Excalibur owner's meet to be sponsored by the factory, and
many many other things.
The Association membership decals are now
available, plus other decals designed specifically for the Excalibur
owner and lover of same. If no other thing was accomplished at the
Sunday meet it was the fact that we all agreed that the perfect spot for
the member decal is right in the center of the gasoline cap. Not only
does it fit and look great here, it will also give the station attendant
something to read while filling your fuel tank!
As the sun commenced to set, Martin and Elite
Shane jotted down some very interesting facts about some of the 25 plus
unusual and special interest auto's they have owned ranging from a 1936
Auburn to a 1964 Avanti, and even the motorcycle that Martin rides to
work occasionaly on nice days to the Great Lakes Training Center.
George, wife Kitty and son George also left us a
note prior to leaving. They wrote of their two daughters Linda and Besty,
18 and 17 years of age, respectively, and they mention several of their
special interest auto's (which include a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow
Sports Saloon, a Phantom V Limo, a Thunderbird and several others).
George is owner of Diversified C.P.C.
International, a chemical production firm. He finished by writing " I
thought
this was a very successful parade and also believe this club will be
very successful, enjoyed meeting you and your family great hospitality".
We bid our newly acquired friends good-by and
hope to see them, along with all of you, at the Annual Excalibur Owners
meet at Milwaukee, Wisconsin August 20,21 and 22.
