Electronic Control Modules [ECM] Problem (from Bob Nisbet, Alabama)

1982 Phaeton w/305 Engine and Quadra-Jet Carburetor

I had a problem with a rough running engine and rebuilding the carburetor didn't help. Follow-up testing indicated that the ECM was sending only 3 volts to the throttle position sensor on the carburetor. It should have been 5 volts.

The ECM repair facility  [FullLogic.com] recommended that I temporarily apply an external 5 volt supply to see if the engine smoothed out. If this solves the roughness problem, either the ECM module is bad or there is a short in the wiring.

I determined that my module was bad. [It is located in the left wall on the driver's side behind the carpeted side panel.]

FullLogic said that a good solution was to install a permanent external 5 volt regulator [from Radio Shack] instead of rebuilding the unit.

Note: ECMs are used on all 1982 and later Excaliburs.
