How to interpret the serial number ?

Before everything, I would like to thank Dan Brush who sent me this precious information.

Three distinct periods exist related to three different serial numbers.

From 1965 to 1970, the serial number was composed by 4 digits (NNNN). The first SSK had the serial number #1001, the first Roadster #3001 and the first Phaeton #6001. Then, for each new built car, the factory added one to that number. That number was used to keep track of how many they had built since the beginning

Ex: If your SSK serial number is 1039, that means it's the 39th SSK built since the beginning of the production.

From 1970 to 1980, 2 new digits have been added in front of the serial number (YYNNNN). That 2 new digits are the year of the production of the car. The rule for the 4 last digits is the same than during the first period.

Ex: if you phaeton serial number is #797438, your car was built in 1979, and it's the 1438th phaeton built since the beginning of the production (7438 - 6000 = 1438)

After 1980, the US government made them add 12 more digits in front of the 6 digits. (DDDDDDDDDDDDYYNNNN). Except that, the interpretation of the serial number (last 6 digits) is the same than before.

I hope that this explanations will help you to better know your car.
